You can use Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ to record audio,
and optionally convert it into MP3 which almost anybody can play.

If you're feeling especially adventurous, you could use PhotoStory
once you've recorded the MP3, and combine moving + still pictures with
the MP3 track. Just don't make your kid sit in front of the PC singing
while you do your first photostory, or we'll have to call the agencies
;-)
