Thank you Elmo and Rock for your replies, I think I have the problem
vanquished for now.

-Turning down hardware acceleration had no effect.

-My computer (an Averatec Tablet/Laptop) has shared memory for the video. I
increased it from 32 to 64 meg, but that had no effect.

-I switched to an older Logitec optical mouse, and restored my system to a
time before all this started. But, again, no change.

-Finally, I started shut down some of the tasks running in the background
(most notabably the keyboardsurrogate.exe program) and freed up about 50k of
memory.

The addtional free main memory did the trick. I've ordered some addtiional
RAM for my computer for a more permanent solution.
