Not many programs need upnp I believe, so disabling it should not be a
big problem. I'm not sure why you think that the icons in the tray have
something to do with SSPD? Are they specific icons that you are having
trouble with?

If you do disable SSPD, you can see if it causes problems and switch it
on again if it does,
