Update; I've restored my computer to a date before the mouse or intellipoint
software was installed. Then I just plugged the MS Notebook Optical mouse
in, and installed it as a generic HID mouse. The mouse works, but I get the
same "pausing" as I had before.

Another thing I didn't post about before is that this pausing of the mouse
and flashing of the screen is variable in its frequency. There may be an
hour where I don't notice it, and then it starts to get so bad that it is
hard to work.
