Did you encounter a power interruption lately or some abnormal XP
shutdown?

The KB article is a good idea, but starts with:

1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk

UBCD4WIN is also great and everyone should have one, but it also
requires you to have an XP installation CD.

Why don't you just create a bootable CD that has only the Windows
Recovery Console on it?

The cost is quite reasonable at $zero. One requirement is that you
have a working machine with hardware capable of burning a CD.

That will give you the same commands as if you booted RC from a "real"
XP installation CD or were clever enough to install RC on your HDD
(hindsight!).

You may be able to get away with just booting on that CD and run
chkdsk /r on your HDD. Maybe...

It is certainly easier than some of the alternatives and does not
require an XP installation CD.
