Without so much as a by your leave my computer began to install IE8
the other evening. I reckoned it was probably time to update so I
let it proceed. Now I find IE8 takes a lot longer to connect. My
startup page is 'blank' so I'm wondering what it is trying to do when
it says it is connecting. Once it gets going it seems to be OK.

I'm using XP SP3 on AMD 64x2 dual processor 4000+ 2.10 GB 1.00
GB RAM.
