functionally and externally, it looks like the Hauppauge unit (mine also
gets hot, but not so hot that you can't hold it). But the specs on the
Artec unit suggest lower requirements from the host computer.

As to power consumption, the maximum you can draw from a USB port is 2.5
watts (5 volts at 500ma), which is 250 mah from a 10 volt battery. That
is about 7% of the capacity of a typical laptop battery, so it shouldn't
"kill" the battery life, although it's certainly not going to help it.
In any case, I have always presumed that watching TV was a "plugged in"
activity, which does not mean that there might not be times when you
might like to do it on battery.
