Multi-Part Archives are fairly common.
RAR (.RAR or .Part01.rar, Part02.rar, etc or .r01, r02, r03, etc.)
ZIP (.ZIP + .z01, z02, z03, etc or Part1.zip, Part2.zip, etc)
Essentially - it's taken a file/set of files&folders and split it into
several smaller files as it compresses them. You need all the pieces of the
puzzle (all the files in the series) to extract everything successfully.
There's even applications that just split a large file into several smaller
ones (no compression to speak of):
HJSplit (.001 + .002 + .003, etc)
