Another tack to at least consider: a second cell phone. You might find
a used one that is good and inexpensive enough. And it should work
fine with the radio disabled. Unfortunately, Verizon doesn't use SIM
cards, so you couldn't easily use the new phone as a spare. Although
it is possible to activate a phone without going to Verizon using a
tool on their web site.
