I can not see any other reason for the symptoms on your side.
Never had any problems with opening of PDFs

UNASSOC does not do any harm. The necessary associations are re-created
by running the repair.
Under Vista my recipe even made it possible to assign the Adobe Reader
as the instrument to open attachments of mails instead of Acrobat coming
up.
