'Only new messages' should be fine.

To download the latest headers, you can click on 'Get next headers' on the
top toolbar.


Could be your 'View' setting

View > Current View > Show All Messages (when in the relevant newsgroup)

If not, then there's also a dedicated OE group, where you may also pick up a
useful suggestion
