You seem to be referring to two different things - restore from a backup and
System Restore points. To the first point, I would suggest you use a more
reliable way of imaging such as Acronis True Image. Then you will have no
issues whatsoever restoring your system.

As for dual-booting issues, yes there is a problem with System Restore when
dual-booting XP and Vista. It is covered here:
