ugly. I've only had one bad one, and that wasn't on the laptop but the
external keyboard. Since it was an ancient Northgate Omnikey, I simply
unplugged it, unscrewed the dozen or so screws and hosed off the board
inside, carefully air drying it. and put it all back together.

As for warranties, some "business" class laptops come with optional
no-fault, all inclusive, support. Primarily bought by IT departments tired
of their sales staff dropping them and breaking the screen. But also useful
when somethng has been spilled on it.
