I would not have a problem doing a hard reset, since I have an excellent
backup tool. In fact I used that already a couple of times to restore
the device when I had odd effects and then hard-reseted and then
restored. But I guess that would not help here, since that would restore
the registry as well.

What you mean here is - I suppose - to do a hard reset and then
re-install each and every program (plus reconfigure it) plus resynch
etc. etc. No way! It is not THAT annoying that I would go for that
pain...
