Try Linux Mint. One of the user-friendliest distros I've ever seen and I
went through all the popular ones. It's based on Ubuntu, it follows the
golden "one application per task" rule (although you can install
anything from the Ubuntu repos) and autoconfigured EVERYTHING on my PC
where many distros failed. NTFS partitions, shares, sound card - you
name it.
