The bit I have not snipped rings bells here. The problem is I cannot
recall all the details how I resolved the problem and I was a little
uncertain at the time how I did.

This is what I wrote at the time to a colleague.

" My suspicion is that changing the Infrared Device in Device Manager
from
Com1 to Com2 was the start of the road to success. This enabled me to
delete all Modems, reboot and Plug and Play detected new hardware and it
installed and worked. It has installed on Com1 as it did before but it
must have been conflicting with the Infrared Device."
