In a previous response to McCarty you said, "The Sony is hooked up as the Master
on the secondary IDE channel (there's nothing on after that as slave) and the
external is hooked up through a firewire port on the back of the computer."

You may want to configure the Sony as a single unit rather than a master since
you don't have a slave unit on the IDE channel.
