The Best Extensions to Enhance Firefox

Jeremy Atkinson posts a great list of his favorite Firefox extensions. I'm a big fan of Firefox, and I already have a few of my own favorite extensions. I'm definitely going to be trying some on his list.

He divided his favorites into four categories: Web developing, Web surfing, reference and information, and media. I'm especially interested in some of his suggestions for reference and information. Some of these really look like winners. How about the Quick Translation extension? Just highlight a word and the translation pops up for you. I'm going to try Converter too. It will help me with metric measurements--and even convert different timezones to my local time.

I already have Cooliris Previews, which he has listed in his surfing category--and Image Zoom which is listed in the media group. I highly recommend both.

I'd have to add one of my favorites into his surfing category--or maybe it would go into a new category called navigating. It's Mouse Gestures. Very cool .. you save a fraction of a second by just using a mouse movement to go back a page, open a new tab, or open a link in a new tab. The Internet is all about speed, and fractions of seconds add up! It's smoother and faster to use a mouse movement rather than reaching for the toolbar or the keyboard.

It's pretty cool to have all these options available. If you're a Firefox user, pick and choose which ones work for you!

Re: The Best Extensions to Enhance Firefox

FireFox is excellent but I'm watching Safari for Windows carefully. The nightly builds are already faster. The number of extensions in FF are far greater, though.

The list of 25 Firefox Extensions on the LifeDev blog is also a good read.

Here's another list of Firefox extensions. These are to help you monitor your time on the Web. I'm going to try at least one of these, and will report back on if it has helped me to manage my time any better. (Maybe it will at least let me know just where my time is going!)

Okay, I tried two of these extensions. TimeTracker just counts the minutes and hours you're actively browsing in a 24-hour period. I didn't find it particularly helpful, so I'll be uninstalling it.

The other one I tried is 8aweek (save 8 hours a week). This one gives more details. It shows which sites you've visited, and how much time you have spent on each one.

According to its default settings selecting which sites are time-wasters and which aren't, I waste very little time--less than 5 percent. I think I'll keep this one for at least a few more days.

It has some other handy options, such as a one-click "save" option where you can save a site to come back to later and read when you have more time.
