iPhone 2.0, iPhone 3.0 or iPhone Nano - a clamshell/flip phone?

iPhone clamshell

If you've been wishing for a clamshell-style iPhone, looks like your dreams may be coming true. Unwired View posted these Photoshop-created images of an iPhone flip.

Apple has filed a publicly available patent for a "Dual Sided Flip" form factor. The main idea is to separate the capacitive touch sensor display and the phone display into two distinct panels. Then the touch sensor array would be put on a transparent panel, with both top and bottom sides touch sensitive--connected  with a hinge.

One advantage of the flip phone would be that it could be made much smaller in its closed state than the current iPhone. And many people strongly prefer the clamshell format and would be very happy to see it become available for the iPhone.

We must add a note of realism here: just because a patent has been filed doesn't mean it will become reality. One can always hope though.
