Moodle: Helping Students Succeed

by Layne Heiny on October 27, 2009

I love Moodle. Every teacher trying to provide an out of the classroom experience for students should look into the product. But the truth is that I didn’t love Moodle two weeks ago. This is because I had forgotten about it; I didn’t love it. I ignored it after an installation from several years ago was not pleasing and there was just too much work to use the product.

Today’s Moodle is different. Installation was completed in less than 15 minutes, including a chemistry theme. Here is a screenshot to the live installation of the virtual classroom.

Once installed, the challenging step was adding students into the database so that students could register.Since only two class periods of chemistry students will be using the drop boxes in the classroom, I had a TA add the student’s names. Imports are available.

Today, students registered, enrolled, and uploaded completed problem sets to the virtual drop box. I could monitor who turned in the assignment, and I was able to see the date and time completed.

Plus, I am able to grade the items turned into the student, mark up suggestions, and return the problem set to the students.

But this isn’t the really cool feature – and the reason I’m in love with Moodle. Now that the installation is complete, I have a very easy way to have students complete practice quizzes, quizzes, and exams online. The students will get immediate feedback – and you’ll be freed from the confines of a 55-minute class period.

Here is a short video of Moodle:

Now it’s your turn. Download the product, install it, fiddle with it, and I bet you’ll love Moodle too.
