Google Revenue Up But AdSense Publisher Revenues Are Down

by Layne Heiny on October 25, 2009

After many years of placing Google AdSense ads on the Tux Reports Network, there have been many times that I’ve botched up ads, not updated sites, or simply ruined good sites. However, I’ve noticed a terrible trend over the past few weeks – and I’m not alone.

This website is well indexed and has years of historical posts. Data are fairly consistent in the idea that AdSense revenue is falling over the course of the past 6 weeks despite an increase in traffic. Friends have stated the same is happening with their revenue.

Oddly, Google announced record profits for 3rd quarter plus suggested the number of clicks also increased:

For Google, the number of paid clicks — that is, how often shoppers clicked on online ads — jumped 14% from the third quarter of last year, a sign that consumers may be increasingly logging on to search for bargains.

I find this odd because the number of clicks for this site has indeed increased (as well as traffic) but the revenue decreased dramatically. I will not disclose a typical day of revenue for this site but will disclose that the revenue dropped to 1/5 the normal level over the past few weeks.

I have not seen an explanation for this revenue drop for publishers but you will notice that I started to add advertising networks from other companies.

What have you done to combat the decrease in revenue?
