McCartney cashes in on Beatles' catalog

The Beatles

UPI stated yesterday that Paul McCartney and iTunes have reached a $400 million agreement which will make the Beatles catalog available on iTunes. Some of the money will go to Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison, but most likely McCartney will get the most out of this deal.

Michael Jackson, EMI, and Sony will also benefit because of various Beatles publishing or recording rights.

This may impact McCartney's divorce settlement with Heather Mills McCartney, and not in a good way, at least in his view. She may increase her demands to include a portion of this latest windfall.

I'm really happy to hear that the Beatles songs may be offered soon on iTunes. I like iTunes, and I use it whenever I happen to have some extra money to spend on music, or when I'm lucky enough to receive an iTunes gift card. I appreciate the option to choose only my very most favorite songs from an album instead of having to buy the whole thing and skip a lot of the songs because they aren't to my taste. I think it will be a big benefit to have all these great old songs available. I'd love for them to have more classical music of all types and more 70s-80s tunes.

Re: McCartney cashes in on Beatles' catalog

Turns out the UK news organizations that originally reported this may not have all their facts straight. Both Sony/ATV Music Publishing, the joint venture owned by Sony and singer Michael Jackson, and Apple Inc. have cast doubts over the story.

One spokesperson stated simply that the reports are "untrue." Another called the reports "unsubstantiated speculation."
