Seth Weintraub tests out the nightly builds of WebKit and concludes the browser is going to get real fast.
First, this post is written in Safari's latest nightly build - beta 4 - downloaded from the webkit website. Second, Mr. Weintraub is absolutely correct. This browser is much fast than the Safari beta 3.
Browsing to this website really shows off the speed of the browser. The browser showed the pages faster than any other browser. Next, I was happy that Ctrl-T opens up a new tab. Apparently Apple's decision to use the KHTML code base was wise. And as an alternative to Microsoft IE, Safari is a clear winner.
Yet, problems remain annoying enough that I may stick with FireFox. The first annoyance is the display fonts shown in the default window. This website looks blurry and so I'll have to figure out what needs to be changed. Second, highlighting a portion of a line ends up defaulting to the complete line first. I use cut and paste so often that this annoyance is distracting. Next, there are a few nice plugins for firefox that are handy. Last, and I admit this is really picky, the steal colors and look of the browser do not fit with the Vista defaults. Regardless, I'll spend more time playing with ths build and make a decision after really giving the browser options and plugins attention.
Update: Mr. Weintraub mentions keeping bookmarks but this took me a few clicks to figure out where they were "hidng." I expected to be able to click on the "Bookmarks" label in the menu bar. However, the FireFox bookmarks were not present. Instead, click on the book icon and you will see near the bottom left a link for imported bookmarks. Very cool.
